Historical Context
Historical Context
Doulton’s Lambeth works (London) became one of Britain’s most important Victorian art pottery producers in the late 19th century, evolving from industrial stonewares into highly decorative wares shown at international exhibitions and sold to a growing middle-class market hungry for “artistic” interiors.
Slater’s Patent refers to a late-19th-century technique used by Doulton to create textured, patterned grounds and decorative panels/effects that suited the Aesthetic Movement and the period’s fascination with Japanese and medieval-inspired surface decoration. Pieces like this were intended as statement décor often displayed in pairs on mantelpieces, étagères, or in the fashionable “art corner.”
