Kyoto Ware Bottle Vase – Blue to Cream Ombré Glaze - Japanese Meiji Period
Kyoto Ware Bottle Vase – Blue to Cream Ombré Glaze - Japanese Meiji Period
A striking tall Japanese bottle vase attributed to Kyoto/Kiyomizu ware, dating to the late Meiji to early Taishō period (c. 1890–1920). The form is beautifully proportioned, with a rounded lower body rising into a long, tapering neck and an elegant flared trumpet rim.
The glaze is the standout feature. A rich cobalt-to-turquoise blue that gradually transitions into a soft cream at the neck, with fine surface crazing that adds depth and character. A superb decorative piece for a console, mantel or tokonoma inspired display.
(Display use recommended due to rim condition)
36.5cm high
Unmarked example; attribution and dating are made on the basis of form, glaze and construction.
Condition: Chips/nibbles to the rim. General age-related wear and fine crazing to the cream glaze. Sold as a decorative antique with condition reflected in price.
Origin: Japan
Time Period: Late Meiji to early Taishō period (c. 1890–1920)
Historical Context
Historical Context
During the Meiji period (1868–1912) Japan rapidly expanded international trade, and Kyoto workshops (often grouped under Kyō-yaki / Kiyomizu-yaki, i.e., “Kyoto/Kiyomizu ware”) produced ceramics that ranged from highly decorated Satsuma-style export pieces to refined monochrome and flambe-inspired glazes echoing Chinese precedents. Tall, architectural forms like this made for display in alcoves (tokonoma) or for flower arranging/ikebana suited both Japanese interiors and Western tastes for “Japonisme” decorative objects.
The blue to cream gradient is very characteristic of turn of the century studio and workshop experimentation with sprayed/washed glazes and controlled kiln effects, and these large decorative vases were commonly sold through export channels to Europe and the UK.
